Wild Chix: A Weekend of Courage, Camaraderie, and New Skills

Getting confident with Firearms
Getting confident with Firearms

This weekend, I joined a bunch of incredible women from across the North Island for a Wild Chix adventure — and it turned out to be one of the most empowering weekends of my life.

I’ll be honest, I arrived on Friday feeling a little nervous but mostly curious to learn something new. The crackling outdoor fire set the perfect tone for the evening’s introductions and safety briefing — relaxed, welcoming, and full of anticipation. Afterwards, we switched our torches to red light mode and walked quietly down the road in the dark, listening to the sounds of the bush. It was calm, grounding, and set the tone for what would become a weekend of learning and connection.

Over the next two days, I learned more than I ever expected. Izzy, our guide, has a wealth of knowledge — patient, encouraging, and deeply passionate about what she does. She made every part of the weekend feel achievable, even for beginners like me. I wore hunting gear from Hunters Element, and it couldn’t have been a better fit — comfortable, practical, and perfect for my first time moving silently through the bush.

We practiced with rifles, took turns at target shooting, and I was amazed at how supportive everyone was. No pressure, just steady guidance and encouragement. The butchering session was unexpectedly fascinating, and I felt proud watching the women who hunt regularly — capable, confident, and strong. No one needed a man to carry their catch, and that was truly empowering to see.

The food package was another highlight. Everything was delicious, fresh, and nourishing — exactly what we needed after long days outdoors. I’ll definitely opt in for it again next time.

By Sunday afternoon, I felt both relaxed and challenged in the best possible way. I’d learned new skills, faced a few fears, and made genuine connections. Wild Chix isn’t just about hunting — it’s about confidence, community, and discovering your own strength out in nature.

If you’ve ever thought about giving it a go, do it. You’ll come home with muddy boots, a proud heart, and maybe even a new sense of who you are.
