Becoming and finding my fellow Wild Chix

My first "Intro to Hunting"
My first "Intro to Hunting"

Natalie is writing about her journey with Wild Chix - how she started with her first experience in the Urewera Forest until now supporting women in the bush and building confidence.

Last year, I signed up for a women-only “Introduction to Hunting” weekend at Galatea Road End Hunt, at the foot of the Ureweras I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. I had some hunting knowledge from having Uncles that hunt and some experience with firearms, but actually hunting, tracking, butchering the animal and being in the bush was new to me. What I found was something far greater than just a skills workshop—it was a weekend of deep connection, empowerment, and respect for te taiao.

That first weekend, I was feeling a bit unsure, and my anxiety was at an all time high! I drove down with Megan and we spent the 4 hours chatting and connecting. My nerves melted away the moment Izzy arrived and we had all gathered, it was clear that this was a space for learning, sharing, and supporting one another. Izzy was welcoming, the atmosphere was safe and encouraging, and every woman there brought her own story, strength, and reason for being part of the journey.

We learned about animal behaviour, tracking, and ethical hunting practices. We also took time to understand the importance of tikanga in and around the Ureweras—acknowledging the mana of the land and the responsibility we have as manuhiri to tread carefully and respectfully. For me, that was 1 of the powerful part of the weekend: recognizing that hunting isn’t just about harvesting—it’s about understanding, respecting, and giving back.

The best part of that weekend, though, was the bond between the women and connections we made.

We encouraged each other, celebrated each small success, and formed friendships that have lasted well beyond the bush. There’s something incredibly empowering about learning these skills in a space where no one is trying to prove anything—just women supporting women.

Making connections
Making connections

Fast forward to now, and I’ve come back to help Izzy lead our current Huntress weekend.

Standing in front of a new group of women, I see reflections of my self—curious, a bit nervous, and ready to grow. It’s an honour to guide them through the same journey, share what I’ve learned, and remind them that they belong in this space. I still learn from every weekend. I still leave feeling inspired.

These weekends are more than just about hunting. They are about connection—with each other, with nature, and with ourselves. They remind us to be grounded, to listen, and to carry the values of respect and care into everything we do.

I'm proud to now stand on both sides of the journey—and even more proud to be part of a community of women helping each other rise.

Natalie xx
